People in Kulgam area of Anantnag district took to streets this morning after security forces killed a youth, suspecting him to be a militant, sources said here.

Twenty-five-year old Tariq Ahmed, a carpet-shop owner was killed while another youth Shabir Ahmed was seriously injured when troops of the Rashtriya Rifles allegedly opened fire on them, at Bhan village, according to sources.

The Army had laid an ambush in the village following information about possible movement of militants.

The incident sparked massive protests as local residents demanded action against the personnel involved in the firing, saying that the troops fired without provocation and did not try to ascertain the identity of the youths. A police team from Kulgam has been rushed to the village to maintain law and order, sources said.

Meanwhile, a sectional commander of Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen was killed in an encounter with security forces in Doda district.

A team of the Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group of the J&K Police launched a search operation in Achholbani in the district yesterday. Mohammad Yousuf alias Badshah and his associates opened fire on seeing the security forces. The sectional commander was killed in retaliatory fire.

Yousuf was a bodyguard of Hizb Doda Divisional Commander Jamsheed Marker, killed by security forces on December 10 last year.
