• India’s hopes of winning a bronze medal went up in smoke when No 5 seeds Leander Paes/ Mahesh Bhupathi lost 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 14-16 to Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic (Croatia) in the men’s doubles.
• After losing to Holland, it was the turn for New Zealand who stunned India 2-1. The loss thus ended India’s mathematical chances for a place in the semifinals.
• Archery too drew a blank with the Indian team of Satyadev Prasad, Tarundeep Rai and Majhi Swaiyan went down to Australia (248-236) in the pre-quarterfinals of the team event.
• In athletics the Indian discus throwers were way below their personal marks. Vikas Gowda, competing in Group B finished 15th, while Anil Kumar failed to register even a single legitimate throw in his three attempts in Group A.
• The women discus throwers — Harwant Kaur, Seema Antil and Neelam Jaswant Singh — were a shade better but failed to qualify for the final. Harwant missed the final by a whisker finishing 13th, while while Antil was 14th and Neelam 18th.
