New Delhi is set to be one of the largest contributors to peacekeeping in Sudan, with 2,000 Army troops heading to Central Sudan at the end of this month, ahead of elections in the war-torn nation.

The 1 J&K Light Infantry (JAKLI) battalion has been confirmed for the UN task while a second battalion is being selected by the Army headquarters. This will be New Delhi’s first peacekeeping contribution to Sudan.

India is one of 46 countries that will be contributing to the 10,000-strong troops authorised by the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) to secure the country ahead of elections possibly later this year.

India’s currently mandated contribution of 2,000 troops — one-fifth of the total mandated force level — could, however, go up by October. Army sources said a second contingent, possibly one battalion-strong, would be put on standby for deputation to Sudan if a request was received from the UN.

The UN has also asked for air support from New Delhi. While the IAF has not yet finalised the contingent it plans to send, its spokesperson confirmed that a force would be sent by next month.

The 38-year civil war between the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement witnessed a breakthrough on January 9 this year with the signing of a

Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which proposes democratic elections.
