Ban on cane from other states
Sangli: District collector Nitin Kareer has issued a ban on bringing sugarcane from other states in view of the excess crop in the district and in the State. The collector had convened a meeting in his chamber on Wednesday to discuss the situation arising out of excess production. The meeting was attended by MLAs Sharad Patil, Vyankappa Patki and R.R. Patil and senior officials of the sugar directorate.
Courts sought
Bijapur: Bijapur Vikas Vedike has urged the State Government to sanction additional judical magistrate courts with adequate staff to looking into the pending cases.In a memorandum to Chief Minister J H Patel, law minister M C Nanayya and Karnataka High Court Chief Justice R P I Sethi.
Thousands of cases were pending in the civil and criminal courts here and the judges were facing many problems in the speedy disposal of cases, BVV president Peter Alexander and vice president Nandkishore Rathod said.
Suicide by teens
Karad: In two separate incidents two teenaged girls from Satara ended their life following a failed love affair. According to the police here, Surekha Patil, a sixteen-year-old set herself ablaze last night at her residence when her boyfriend refused to marry her. When her body was being taken in a funeral procession, a group of irate villagers from her village Tambwe set the boy’s shop on fire. In another incident, Sheetal Bhosekar (14) jumped into the Krishna canal river when her teacher turned down her `marriage proposal’. Her body was fished out by the police.
