Mumbai, August 1: Big guns Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Air-India made light work of their clashes against Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Maharashtra State Police (MSP), respectively, as they maintained their unbeaten run in the Bombay Hockey Association Super Hockey League at the Mahindra Stadium, on Tuesday.
BPCL have aggregated 31 points from 11 games, with ten wins and a draw against Western Railway and are placed atop the league ladder. Air-India, who have played a game less than BPCL, have triumphed in all their ten outings.
BPCL were given a run for their money by youthful SAI in the opening half but came up trumps with a slender 3-2 lead at the breather. They then slammed in two penalty-corners early in the second-half to settle the hash of their opponents. The game was fought robustly and S Jeelani of BPCL was injured badly in the process by SAI’s Sunil Singh who was given the marching orders in the second-half. Sunil was later suspended for six months.
International Saurabh Bishnoi gave BPCL the lead by neatly converting their opening penalty-corner in the fourth minute. SAI, supported by a highly vocal crowd, levelled terms in the 10th minute through Rahul Bhatkar who converted their third penalty-corner.
Olympian Sabu Varkey and left-half KT Mohan were concerned in a fine move down the middle before Amar Aiyamma applied the finishing touches after SAI goalkeeper had stopped Varkey’s shot. Mohan made it 3-1 for BPCL and Prem Singh netted one before the two teams crossed over with the score at 3-2 in BPCL’s favour.
BPCL defenders Bishnoi and Ajay Kumar then struck through penalty-corners in the second-half before the match, which was played at a blistering pace, turned out to be a drab affair with BPCL playing out time and SAI running out of goal ideas.
Earlier in the evening, Air-India made sure of victory in the first-half itself when they crossed over with a commanding 4-1 lead against MSP who have yet to register a victory in the competition.
Surinder Singh (2), Kishore Kumar, Gavin Ferreira and Davinder Kumar were on target for Air-India. Yogesh Yesur and Milind Lonare struck for the cops.
