The Madras High Court on Thursday set aside a state government order detaining former Kanchi Mutt manager Sundaresa Iyer and 10 others under the Goondas Act, saying there was no evidence to show there was widespread panic after the murder of Sankararaman and assault on auditor Radhakrishnan.

A division bench gave the order on a batch of 11 habeas corpus petitions. The court directed the government to release the detainees, unless they were required in connection with any other case. Iyer, Raghu, Kathiravan, Appu, Meenakshi Sundaram, K.S. Kumar, Ananda Kumar, Rajini, Stalin, Mattu Baskar and Anil Kumar had been detained under the Act for alleged involvement in the Sankararaman and the Radhakrishnan cases.
