AUGUST 6: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) yesterday arrested one Abid Nelukatta Abdul Rehman for havala transactions worth over Rs 25 crore. ED officials said Abid in connivance with some other persons used to distribute money in the city on the instructions of some people based in Dubai.

A search was conducted at Abid’s office-cum-residence at Dongri under Section 37 of FERA yesterday and Rs 1 lakh in Indian currency, some foreign currency and a few highly incriminating documents about his havala deals, which ran into crores, were seized. Abid in his statement to the ED admitted that he had been dealing through havala channels for over a year now. He said he used to make payments in the city on the instructions of one Baddruddin, who is based in Dubai. During interrogation, Abid also disclosed names and telephone numbers of the people with whom transactions were made.

ED officials said on instructions of Baddruddin, Abid used to collect cash from some people and distribute it other parties. Abid further disclosed during the past two months transactions to the tune of Rs 2.64 crore have been carried out. Abid was produced before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate today and was remanded to judicial custody up to August 14, 1997.
