Israel killed four Hamas militants, including a leader of Hamas’s armed wing, in a helicopter strike in the Gaza Strip on Saturday. Ibrahim al-Maqadma, 50, a founder of Hamas and senior leader of its military wing was killed when four Israeli helicopters blasted his car with missiles.

The missile strike reduced the car to a charred and smoking wreckage, scattering body parts of the four militants riding inside along a street.

Hundreds of grieving Hamas members crowded at the Gaza City morgue where the bodies were taken amid cries of revenge.

‘‘They’ve crossed the red line,’’ said Ismail Haiyah, a senior leader of Hamas. ‘‘They’ve opened a new battle. Hamas will know how to respond and how to get revenge,’’ he added.

The Palestinian Authority condemned Saturday’s attack. ‘‘We condemn the assassination in Gaza and we hold the Israeli government fully responsible for the act,’’ Palestinian Cabinet Minister Saeb Erekat said. The Israeli Army had no immediate comment on the incident. (Reuters)
