NASHIK, Dec 17: The 13th National Convention of Aerospace Engineers began at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) township at Ojhar (20 km from here) today, stressing the need to achieve self-reliance up to 70 per cent in the manufacture of defence products by 2005 AD, from the present 30 per cent, by involving the private sector and improving coordination between researchers and the industry.
The Managing Director, HAL, N K Mohanty, who inaugurated the convention, declared that the public sector giant would diversify into the manufacture of civilian aircraft. He informed that HAL was already working on a 50-seater civilian aircraft project.
Pointing out the shortcomings in research and development on the design side, he stressed the need for better interaction between research institutions and manufacturers to update technology and ensure international quality. He said HAL would prefer to entrust the work of manufacturing spares to private industry and diversify into the manufacture of passenger aircraft.
