GANDHINAGAR, JULY 13: AICC treasurer Ahmed Patel on Monday filed his nomination as the Congress candidate for the July 26 Rajya Sabha election.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, on the other hand, announced the names of Lalit Mehta and Savitaben Sharda as its candidates amid hectic lobbying which went on till Monday morning. Both are staunch RSS followers.
Though several persons were in the race, the BJP finally chose Lalit Mehta, chairman of BJP’s state unit disciplinery action committee, and Savitaben Sharda, former mayor of Surat.
Till Monday, the name of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd Chairman C R Patil was doing the rounds. According to party sources, the group loyal to Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana scuttled Patil’s name and that is how Savitaben Sharda’s name popped up.
