Work on the Rs 6,000-crore Udhampur-Baramulla railway line, connecting J-K to the rest of the country, is expected to resume by mid-August as the Home Ministry today ordered the movement of four additional companies of Central Paramilitary Forces.

Work had stopped last month after the kidnapping and murder of IRCON engineer Sudhir Kumar Pundeer and his brother. The workers had said they would resume work only after they were assured of protection and security by the government.

With the government agreeing to provide Personal Security Officers to IRCON staff and securing the construction site, sources said work will resume once the assurances were translated at the ground level. The state government had also been asked to provide four companies from their own internal resources.
