PUNE, May 31: Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander today paid glowing tributes to the memory of freedom fighter Kamalnayan Bajaj who was a great patriot and philanthropist. He was speaking after unveiling the statue of Kamalnayan Bajaj installed by the Pune Municipal Corporation at the Mumbai-Pune Road.
Congratulating the PMC for taking the initiative in installing the statue at the Kamalnayan Bajaj park, Alexander said that the freedom fighter was one of the finest products of the Gandhian revolution. Kamalnayan Bajaj (who is the father of noted industrialist Rahul Bajaj) believed in the philosophy of non-violence to create a new society, the Governor said.
Kamalnayan Bajaj had participated in the historic Dandi march, salt satyagraha and Quit India movement, Alexander said adding that he also successfully applied the Gandhian principles to business management. Earlier Rajya Sabha member Suresh Kalmadi spoke of the need for further industrial development in the city.
In his speech, President of the Confederation of Indian Industries Rahul Bajaj recalled memories of his father on the occasion. In a lighter vein, he also spoke of his closeness with two friends Suresh Kalmadi who returned to the Congress fold and Sharad Pawar rebel Congress leader, though he preferred to keep his distance from politicians. “Both were friends earlier, but don’t know whether they remain friends today,” he quipped while stating that he had telephoned friend `Sharad’ who was however busy with some work!
Replying to the banter, Kalmadi too reminded Bajaj that both friends are happy where they are. Kalmadi also lauded the contribution of former corporator Ayaz Kazi for his diligent work. Earlier, Mayor Dutta Gaikwad spoke on the occasion. Congressmen supporting Sharad Pawar and who have formed a separate group in the PMC were also present apart from those corporators owing allegiance to Kalmadi and now have returned to the Congress.
