Nov 18: Murray Goodwin was leading a Zimbabwe fightback with an unbeaten 59 on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka today.

Goodwin and Andy Flower, with 39 not out, shared an unfinished fourth-wicket stand of 95 to lift Zimbabwe from 68 for three to 163 for three at tea.

It was Goodwin’s eighth Test half-century.

Zimbabwe, put in to bat, struggled in the morning session as pace pair Pramodya Wickremasinghe and Chaminda Vaas seized three early wickets.

Grant flower was the first out for 17, edging Wickremasinghe to Russell Arnold at second slip with the score on 37 — Zimbabwe’s best opening stand of the season.

In his next over, Wickramasinghe trapped Rennie leg before for 16. Ten minutes before lunch, Neil Johnson hung his bat out at a ball from Vaas to be caught at second slip by Arnold for 17.
