End of an era at Sydney’s White City
SYDNEY: One of Australia’s traditional sporting venues will be consigned to the history books after next year’s Sydney International Tennis tournament.
Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard said at launch of the farewell tournament that five of the world’s top 10 ranked men and 14 of the top 20 women had agreed to play at next year’s event.
Clemente returns to league action after six years
MADRID: The controversial Javier Clemente returns to the Spanish first division on Saturday after six years in charge of the Spanish national team.
On Tuesday Clemente was surprisingly signed up by bottom club Betis — replacing worn-out Chilean veteran Vicente Cantatore — just six weeks after being driven out of the Spain job on a tidal wave of public criticism and even abuse. He has the perfect chance to make a winning start: at home to modest Salamanca.
Clemente was presented to the Betis fans, many of whom have doubts that the outspoken little Basque canbe the saviour of their expensive but unbalanced team.
He was asked by one fan how he would handle Betis’ foreign legion, given that he’s always been critical of the presence of overseas players in Spain.
