The ripples of Gandhigiri may have died down, but the Communist heartland has risen to the call of the Mahatma in a new way. An innovative course on Gandhian philosophy has entrants pouring from Kannur, Kerala’s Red bastion.
The course by Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi teaches about Mahatma and is open to all ages. “To know Gandhi one must know Marx and to know Marx one must know Gandhi. The overwhelming response from Kannur simply supports this saying,” says V Ramdas, secretary of the Nidhi. Out of the 150 applications received so far, nearly 60 are from Kannur. Most of the applicants are between the ages of 25 and 30, bearing out the popularity of Gandhi amongst youngsters. The enthusiasts include a policeman and a retired government official.
The classes will be held at their centres in every district, once in three months. The one-year course is being offered for just Rs 100. The new-age followers will have an innovative project at the end of the course. “The project would be simple but a real test for a future Gandhian. They will be made to write about their vision on Gandhism and how they intend to carry the message to the society as a mission,” says Ramdas.
