Last Russian standing
Defending champion Maria Sharapova kept her record of winning in straight sets intact as she found herself the only Russian in the last four. Nadia Petrova put up some resistance in the first set before losing the tie-break 6-8. The second seed then breezed through the second set 6-3.
Sitting pretty
Lindsay Davenport made Svetlana Kuznetsova bite the dust as the top seed overcame the Russian 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to avenge her defeat at the hands of the fifth seed at the Open last September. The American will next face Mauresmo.
Dream run ends
Anastasia Myskina was bundled out of this year’s French Open in the opening round in her bid to defend her crown. The Russian, surprisingly, made it to the quarter-final stage on a surface she least prefers. The dream run however ended today as Mauresmo swept past 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semis.
