To utilise services of women scientists who can’t work due to domestic constraints, the government was considering flexible working conditions for them. Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said a committee was looking into the issue. Under the proposal, women scientists could be allowed to work through computers at home, Sibal said. In reply to another query, he said Rs. 46.28 crore has been allocated in the current five year plan for setting up gene banks in the country. He added states would be asked to set up regulators for these banks.
Space-based disaster mgt
The Department of Space and Ministry of Home Affairs are implementing a space-based disaster management support system comprising a digital database for disaster-prone areas, and monitoring major natural disasters. MoS in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan said the system was used during the recent floods. PTI
