An Australian group of colleges in Victoria has asked for immediate freeze in registration of new private colleges for international students until the State Government’s emergency audit of 41 high-risk colleges is complete.
Victorian TAFE Association’s executive director,David Williams,said the “failure of the international education market” had damaged the reputation of TAFE colleges,according to ‘The Age’ report today.
The association was concerned that private colleges were continuing to be registered “at a time when existing registrations are not sound,” Williams said.
Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions provide a wide range of predominantly vocational tertiary education courses in Australia.
Fields covered include hospitality,tourism,visual arts,construction,engineering,secretarial skills,community work and computer programming.
Individual TAFE institutions (usually with many campuses) are known either as colleges or institutes,depending on the state or territory.
TAFE colleges are owned,operated and financed by the various state and territory Governments.
