SEPT 16: A petty dispute over a cricket match trigerred communal tension as the rival sides confronted each other forcing the police to fire in the air and explode tear-gas shells at Jhalarapatan in southern Rajasthan yesterday, an official spokesman said today.

A student was beaten up during the petty quarrel in the match. His family-members retaliated leading to gathering of a mob from both the sides.

Police used batons, lobbed tear-gas shells and fired in the air to disperse the violent mob, the spokesman said.

Several persons, including four policemen, were injured when the mob pelted stones and forced closure of the shops, police said.

Police rounded up two dozen persons, including three students, in connection with the incidents. Additional police personnel were deployed in the town where the situation was officially stated to be “under control”.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders have been promulgated in Jhalarpatan.
