.

Incessant rains, especially in catchment areas of the Koyna and Warna dams, has brought in a fresh threat of floods to Sangli and Karad in Maharashtra’s Satara district.

With the Koyna dam authorities releasing 66,000 cusecs water and Warna 30,000 cusecs, villages in the Krishna basin have been issued a flood alert.

Water Resources Minister Ajit Pawar said Koyna, Warna, Dhom, Kanher, Radhanagari and Kasari dams in the Krishna basin have filled to capacity. ‘‘In such a situation, there is no other alternative but to release water from the dam,’’ he said.

Pawar said the Krishna was flowing dangerously at the 540.37 metre mark and if the water rises by a mere 0.4 metres — 540.77 metres — Sangli district would witness floods.
