NAGPUR, December 12: Members of the Nagpur University Young Teachers’ Association will launch a chain fast agitation from December 15 in front of the Nagpur University office. Their demands include removal of the condition about number of students for sanctioning grants to non-aided colleges, waiver of the condition for temporary appointments, salary grants to pay science teachers engaging the optional subjects, equitable quota of B Ed and D Ed seats for Commerce stream and application of the Pension Scheme for teachers employed with aided physical education colleges.

Gujarat train services restored

SURAT: Train services, which were disrupted on Thursday due to a derailment on the busy Ahmedabad-Delhi section of the Western Railway, were restored on Friday afternoon, a railway spokesman said. The field-staff of the railway worked for about 36 hours at the site on the Kim-Kosamba line near here where the 2956 up Jaipur-Mumbai Express had derailed, injuring nine passengers.

I-T raid on PWD contractor

PANAJI: Officers of the investigating wing of the Income Tax department raided the residence and business premises of a Public Works Department contractor who also owns a seafood export business in Panaji and Ratnagiri. Jewellery, cash, fixed deposits and share certificates worth lakhs were seized. The contractor has been filing income tax returns without paying income tax. He has also floated several concerns to export seafood and acquired immovable benami properties in Goa, Bangalore and Kerala. The extent of his unaccounted wealth is being assessed.

Teenager kidnaps for a motorbike

PUNE: A passion for wheels and desire to own a motorbike led a teenaged girl to kidnap a six-year-old and extract a ransom of Rs 50,000 for her safe return. According to Deccan Gymkhana police, 18-year-old Vidya Prakash Kale kidnapped Vaishnavi from her school premises on December 8 and using duplicate keys confined the child to a vacant flat near Mhatre Bridge, which belonged to State Agriculture Minister Harshvardhan Patil. She then went out to call the young girl’s father Ganesh Suse, a government contractor, and demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000. However, Vidya was nabbed soon after she collected the ransom money from Suse, police said.
