MUMBAI, July 18: A report on the death in police custody at D N Nagar police station has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission, said the Crime Branch.

Farrokh Patni had been arrested on July 6 in a case of assault and remanded to police custody till July 17. However, he was found dead in the lock-up in the evening of July 13 and his body sent for post-mortem examination.

Relatives of the deceased have alleged that Patni had been tortured by the police during his interrogation and that the police version of suicide was false. Significantly, while police claimed the deceased had died by strangulating himself, the post-mortem report has not showed any ligature mark around the neck.

Meanwhile, the crime branch said photographs of the body have been taken and the post-mortem recorded in a video shooting. However, the cause of death has been reserved pending the histopathology report and the chemical analysis report, sources said. Investigations are in progress and senior officers are closelymonitoring the case.
