CHANDIGARH, June 23: The Punjab unit of the Communist Party of India has strongly opposed the move of the state government to increase the bus fares by 68 per cent.

In a statement, party secretary Joginder Dayal and group leader in the Vidhan Sabha Hardev Arshi said the Akali Dal-BJP government was doing this to help the private bus operators who were mostly Akalis including Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

They said the plea that it was being done to neutralise the losses of the state transport was ridiculous. The Akali Dal government had been in favour of denationalisation. The CPI threatened to launch an agitation on this issue.
