Police today conducted pre-dawn raids at several places in the city and arrested Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front acting chairman Javed Ahmed Mir and five of his associates.

The police said they had successfully foiled the plans of separatist conglomerate Hurriyat Conference — of which JKLF is a constituent — to take out anti-poll demonstrations coinciding with the fourth phase polls. The police also swooped down on Rajbagh offices of Islamic Students’ League and Muslim League. As many as six workers were rounded up.

At Wularhama this afternoon, militants hurled a grenade a hundred yards away from booth no. 13 that went for a repoll along with three other booths in Pahalgam constituency of south Kashmir. Head Constable Tahir Ahmed and service-grade constable Javed Ahmed of the 3rd Battalion Jammu Kashmir Armed Police were injured. Polling was suspended for a while after the attack.

The bandh call by Hurriyat Conference, backed by almost all major separatist organisations, to protest the fourth phase polls, passed off peacefully with no reports of any big incident. Life in the city and all major district headquarters in the Valley came to a halt.
