The Sri Lankan Supreme Court today sentenced former agriculture minister S B Dissanayake, a strong critic of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, to two years imprisonment for contempt of court.
Dissanayake, a legislator from the United National Party, was held in contempt over a speech he made last year in November critical of judges and the Supreme Court.

Dissanayake, once a close ally of Kumaratunga, was instrumental in her electoral successes since 1993. But he fell out of favour in 2001 and led a split that brought down her government that year. —PTI
