SURAT, March 25: Congress workers here want Party president Sonia Gandhi to urge veteran Congress leader Zinabhai Darji to return to active politics to revitalise the party. This demand was conveyed to AICC general secretary Madhavrao Scindia by the party workers on Thursday morning.
Darji, the proponent of KHAM (Kshtriya, Harijan, Adivasi and Muslim) theory and a confidante of late prime minister Indira Gandhi, had announced his retirement from active politics last year.
Former MLA Ushaben Patel has already written to Gandhi, Arjun Singh and Mohesina Kidwai, requesting them to do the needful.
Darji, who had been convenor of Indira Gandhi’s 20-points programme, enabled the Congress party to capture power, after the party was split in 1969 and it suffered in 1977, by introducing the KHAM theory. Patel said that if Darji agreed to lead the Congress, it could help the Congress party to unite.
Agreeing City Congress vice-president Babubhai Patel said,“If the Congress is to be revitalised in Gujarat we need to persuade Darji to be active again.”
Meanwhile, Scindia told the Congress workers to get ready for organisational elections to be held in May. Addressing the Congress workers meeting at party office, Scindia exhorted every party worker to spread the Congress ideology and make at least two active members in each polling booth.
Scindia also advised the Congress workers to organise the OBCs, SCs/STs and minority communities and raise their voice whenever the weaker and vulnerable sections of society were subjected to injustice.
