AMRITSAR, January 28: The joint candidate of SAD-BJP from Gurdaspur parliamentary seat, Vinod Khanna, today charged Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder, sitting MP from the border constituency, with neglecting the area and for not carrying out any development work here.

Addressing media persons at the Khannan Samark office of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the cine star said that he had purposely selected Gurdaspur as his constituency as he wanted to bring all-round development in the border belt which in spite of “good land and good people” was the most backward area in the state. Gurdaspur was a challenge for him and he had whole heartedly accepted it, he disclosed.

He claimed that he had come to Punjab not to become a politician but as an ordinary man who understood the problems of the masses. These he would highlight at the proper place by using his influence, Khanna said. He added that he had been doing social service earlier also but now he had taken this responsibility on a larger scale.

The film star was ofthe view that it was time for people like him, who had accomplished and achieved success in life, to come forward to do something for the nation also.

On his choice of party, Khanna said that BJP was the only party which could provide a stable government. He said that he was asked to join politics earlier also but as an actor he had a lot of work to do and look after his children as well so he had not joined politics then.

Condemning Operation Bluestar, the cine star put the entire responsibility for this sad event on the Congress government. He also accused the Congress of infiltrating and supporting mafia gangs in the film industry.

Regarding corruption, he said that it was a national problem which could be eliminated if people joined hands and made the politicians accountable. He promised that his party would root out corruption.

He earlier visited the Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple. Bhushan Behl, president of Jallianwala Bagh Shaheed Parivar Samiti also felicitated Vinod Khanna by giving him asiropa on his visit to the Jallianwala Bagh. He was accompanied by Daya Singh Sodhi, BJP candidate from Amritsar parliamentary seat, Subhash Sharma, Mayor and Pardeep Singh Walia, district president of Akali Dal (Urban). Khanna also addressed an election rally at Fatehgarh Churian in the afternoon.
