Assam Congress leader Dibyendu Langthasa, who is also the youngest son of veteran party leader Gobinda Chandra Langthasa, had a narrow escape when suspected Black Widow militants ambushed his vehicle near Haflong on Thursday morning.
Official sources here said, Dibyendu was on his way to Guwahati when militants opened fire at his four-vehicle convoy at Garubari village near Somtila under Haflong police station at around 10:30 am.
While Dibyendu’s vehicle narrowly escaped the bullets, a Maruti Gypsy following him came under attack and the driver and a PSO traveling in it were seriously injured.
Dibyendu had contested as a Congress candidate and lost the just-concluded North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council election in Mahur constituency. His father Gobinda Langthasa, too, had unsuccessfully fought the Council elections from Haflong.
Dibyendu is the fourth son of Gobinda Langthasa to have been targeted by militants. While eldest son Purnendu Langthasa, a former chief executive member of the Autonomous Council, was killed by Black Widow militants in June this year during the run-up to the Council election that was subsequently postponed, second son Normendu was killed in the heart of Haflong town in May 2003. Third son Nirmalendu, who was kidnapped by the ULFA in April 2004 was, however, released unhurt two months later.
