GUWAHATI, Jan 2: The Congress party in Assam today demanded imposition of President’s rule in the State “at least during the elections” by complaining that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) would rig the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to reporters, State Congress president Tarun Gogoi said his party was convinced that the AGP was preparing to sabotage holding of free and fair elections in the State by virtue of it being power, and said dismissal of the Mahanta government was the only way to save the polls.“Mahanta has failed to tackle the law and order situation which has led to rapid deterioration of the situation,” Gogoi, who had at hand the three village incidents of the past two days which left 21 dead in Darrang district, said.He leader also blamed Mahanta for the poor economic scenario .
