Former Lok Sabha Speaker and rebel NCP general secretary P.A. Sangma was in for a shock today as his party played second fiddle to the Congress in the District Council elections in Garo Hills.

Though the NCP contested all 29 seats for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, it won only nine of them. The Congress won 12 seats.

Having managed to keep its seat tally ahead of NCP, the Congress camp was jubilant. Former CM and state Congress chief S.C. Marak described his party’s victory as a warning to Sangma.

Marak predicted that Sangma would have to work hard if he wanted to retain his Tura seat. He said if Sangma failed to get the NCP’s symbol it would be ‘‘tough’’ for him during the coming parliamentary polls.

Marak’s name is being considered in the Congress circles as the party’s Tura Lok Sabha candidate.
