Calcutta, July 31: Communists work for the masses till the last day of their lives, West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu today asserted while resuming office after his brief hospitalisation in New Delhi.
"Communists work for the masses. They work till the last day of their life, even from the death bed," a beaming Basu told newspersons at the state secretariat.
"It’s my pleasure," Basu said after receving a bouquet from scribes who wished him good health and long life.
Several ministers and senior officials called on the octogenarian leader at his chamber at the secretatriat.
A delegation of several chambers of commerce also met Basu, who had to be rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi on Friday after he complained of uneasiness while presiding over a meeting of the CPI(M) Central Committee.
Basu was transferred to the All India Institue of Medical Sciences the same day. He was discharged on Saturday and arrived here last night.
