The new land law, introduced by his government, has left Chief Minister Narain Datt Tiwari red in the face once more. This time, it has attracted the ire of the Mufti-e-Azam of Deoband, Maulana Habib-ur-Rehman, who has issued a ‘‘fatwa’’ against it.
The Mufti claims the new law, which bars the owner of an agricultural plot from writing a will or giving away the land in charity, is against the Muslim Personal Law. The ‘‘fatwa’’ spells more bad news for the ruling Congress as it was issued last week by a three-member panel of the Muftis of Deoband on the request of Maulana Masood Madni, the son of Maulana Asad Madni, president of the Jammat-e-Ulema-e-Hind (an outfit once close to the Congress).
Masood, who had started his campaign against the land law from Roorkee, said he ‘‘would continue to expose the so-called secular face of the Congress.’’
