CHANDIGARH, January 8: A car dealer has been directed to pay interest on a deposit to a local resident by the UT District Consumer Forum II.

Labh Singh Bhatia, a resident of Sector 28, deposited Rs 21,000 for booking of an Uno car with Amardeep Motors Limited, Industrial Area. The booking was cancelled but the amount was not refunded within 60 days of the receipt of the cancellation, as promised by the car dealer.

However, the principal sum of Rs 21,000 was refunded after a year of the cancellation. The condition of the booking provided that interest would be paid at the rate of 9 per cent annually and in case the deposit continued to be with the opposite party for more than two years, the interest would be calculated at the rate of 12 per cent.

The forum, comprising its president R.P. Bajaj and member Kamlesh Gupta, observed that the complainant was entitled to interest at the rate of 9 per cent per annum and allowed costs of Rs 250.
