In A move to strengthen commercial ties with India, China’s Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will be visiting India early next month to open a new Consulate General office in Kolkata. He will also be coming to Delhi during his three-day tour between September 7 and 9.

Yang’s visit comes after External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated a Consulate General office in Guangzhou on June 5 this year during his China visit.

The reciprocal agreement was signed between India and China in November 2006, when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited India. In the joint declaration issued by the two countries, they had said, “In order to sustain, facilitate and promote greater engagement between the two countries, an additional Consulate General shall be opened in each other’s country. The Indian side shall open a new Consulate General in Guangzhou while the Chinese side shall open a new Consulate General in Kolkata. In this context, the mutually satisfactory resolution of the long-pending issue of the property of the Consulate General of India in Shanghai is a positive development.”
