With World No. 1 Roger Federer deciding to skip the opener of the 2008 ATP tour and IMG’s decision to increase the prize money to $436,000 the Chennai Open, starting here from December 31, is likely to attract top players.
The prize money has been increased by $20,000 and is now at par with the Doha Open, which is held on the same dates of the Chennai and Adelaide Open as season openers.
The entry for Chennai Open closes on November 26. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain and Russian Mikhail Youzhny have already confirmed their participation. This would be Nadal’s fourth visit to Chennai. Spaniard Carlos Moya has been competing in the event since 1999.
The only South Asian tournament held in India has witnessed players like Richard Krajicek, Mikael Tillstrom, Patrik Rafter, Todd Woodbridge, Boris Becker competing for top honours apart from top Indians.
