COLOMBO, February 3: Setting at rest rumours of uncertainty, Britain’s Prince Charles arrived here today on a four-day visit to attend Sri Lanka’s 50th Independence Day celebrations to be held tomorrow.
As the largest-ever security operation for the capital Colombo went into action, the Prince was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the airport with the presentation of a guard of honour. There was visible relief all around here over the arrival of Charles, disregarding the massive LTTE suicide bomb attack on a famous Buddhist shrine at Kandy, the original venue of the celebrations. The invitation to Prince Charles was questioned by the influential Buddhists.
