In view of the upcoming visit of Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, the Cabinet Committee on Security today reviewed the developments there, particularly after the widespread protests over the killing of 12 Nepalese hostages in Iraq.

Deuba, sources said, is expected to be in New Delhi in the second week of September. Plans are, however, being firmed up.

The CCS, which met for nearly two hours under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was informed of the situation in Nepal after violent crowds took to the streets and attacked places of worship yesterday.

No major incidents of violence were reported from Nepal today with the curfew being lifted at 9.30 am. It was reimposed at 7 pm. After the reports of violence yesterday, Singh had spoken to Deuba over the phone.

The CCS also took stock of the situation in Manipur. It’s learnt that Home Minister Shivraj Patil is not expected to make any major announcements with the committee in favour of continuing the suspension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act only in some areas.

Patil will hold meetings with officials and various groups to obtain a first hand account of the situation in the state. The Government, in the meantime, has hinted that Assam Rifles may be withdrawn from there and be replaced by the BSF by the end of the year.
