West Bengal drew a blank at this year’s All India Police Golf Tournament held in Chandigarh, thanks to the absence of top CID officials who were busy investigating the death of Rizwanur Rehman.
Out of the five senior IPS officers chosen to represent Bengal, ADG CID Bhupinder Singh and IG (Special) CID Neeraj Narayan Pandey were busy with the case, while Additional Commissioner-II C V Murlidharan was ordered to stay back to supervise law and order as his colleague DC (Headquarters) Gyanwant Singh found himself among those named in the case.
Only DG Fire Services Anil Kumar and Special IG Vivek Sahay were able to participate in the tournament. Interestingly, last year Bhupinder Singh had been adjudged individual runner up in the tournament held in Bangalore.
“We did not fare very well this time. Out of the five persons scheduled to take part, three failed to make it to the tournament. Those who failed to go were our best players. If we had our full strength we would have scored well,” said Sahay. All five senior IPS officers practiced throughout the year to participate in the tournament.
“I would have loved to participate. But then the Rizwanur case was handed over to us. It is a critical and important case and my department is very busy with the investigation,” said Bhupinder Singh.
