Domestic car sales shot up by 8.7 per cent in July thanks mainly to the sales pitch launched by Hyundai, Tata Engineering, Fiat and Honda. But market leader Maruti fell by 25 per cent as sales slowed down in July despite a hefty price cut in its bread-and-butter model M 800.
Total passenger sales rose for the second successive month this fiscal to 43,427 cars from 39,938 cars in July 2001, according to the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Cumulative (April-July 2002-03) car sales was, however, down by 3.5 per cent to 1.58 lakh units against 1.64 lakh units in the year-ago period.
Sales of Maruti dipped by 25.2 per cent at 18,457 units during July this year (24,697 units a year ago) while Ford India witnessed an 8.7 per cent drop at 1,006 Ikons.
