After the recent furore in Parliament over the shortage of Bullet Proof Jackets (BPJ) for the Army, one lakh jackets are expected to be available in a ‘‘couple of months’’.

Speaking on the sidelines of a CII seminar, Lt Gen V.K. Jetley, Master General of Ordnance, said the Army had ordered one lakh BPJs for troops in J-K. Presently, the Army faces a shortage of 2,50,000 BPJs, which was highlighted by the last PSC report.

It is understood that 17 companies, both Indian as well as foreign, have filed tenders for the contract while the DRDO is also working on developing an indigenous BPJ.

‘‘The bids have been submitted by Indian and foreign companies… Initially, we are looking at procuring over 100,000 jackets,’’ Jetley said.
