‘It won’t motivate the team’

•I don’t think such things work. By sending such letters he’s just insulting the players. I don’t know what his intentions are but such actions don’t motivate a team. I won’t do such a thing. The best thing to do when a team is down is to sit with them and sort out the problem areas.

MK Kaushik

(Indian women’s hockey team coach)

‘It was direct, I love it’

•I love what John did to his players. And the best thing about it is he (John) didn’t go to the press nor did he involve any officials. His was a direct approach and that’s also my style. The players should understand that a sweet-talking coach is no good for them, they should take his comments in their stride. Of course this is a tricky situation and there will be players who wouldn’t like this but as a coach he has done the right thing.

Subhash Bowmick

(East Bengal coach)

•I’m not sure if this would have worked in India but I certainly see it working in Australia. When I first heard about it I was a bit shocked, but my second thoughts were different. Buchanan would only say such things if he is sure that his team will react positively. But that’s an Aussie approach; had a coach said such things in India half the team would have stopped playing cricket. The Aussies are equipped to deal with such pressures.

Anshuman Gaekwad

(Former Indian coach)

‘This could backfire’

•Criticising players or their attitude doesn’t work. If I was coach I would have told the players that the rivals (India) were better in this Test and there are still two more Tests to go and they should avoid repeating mistakes and fight back. The Aussies have just lost one Test and that also after so many years, this is no crisis so the player’s don’t need to be blasted as this could backfire.

Sreedharan

(Indian volleyball coach)
