MUMBAI, DEC 2: Bombay YMCA set up a title clash with hosts Ghatkopar YMCA when they trounced Wellingdon YMCA 81-25 in the junior boys semi-finals of the XIth Bombay YMCA Basketball Open Tournament at Pant Nagar here today. The tournament is sponsored by Kanara Engineering and United Phosphorous.
Wellingdon YMCA were making the semi-finals after a gap of 5-6 years. They looked nervous and allowed an early lead to their opponents, who never relinquished it.
Rizwan Shamshad of the winners scored six three-pointers in his 20 points. Shailesh Saldhana (17) and Aamir Ansari (14) were the other scorers for Bombay YMCA. Rafik Shaikh (7), Firdoz Qadri (6), and Shabul Hasan (6) were the chief scorers for Wellingdon YMCA.
In the men’s quarter-final, Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana, Nagpur defeated Mumbai Police 59-47 after leading 30-21 at half-time. Mumbai Police fought well and came within two points of SNG’s score but captain and play-maker Pankaj Deshmukh changed the course of play with shrewd decisions. Pankaj took atime-out, substituted himself with Hemant Waghade and SNG’s stocks zoomed up.
For the winners, Mahesh Gaherwar (15), Pradeep Mukherjee (12) and Pankaj Deshmukh (8) were the leading scorers, while Police, relying heavily on their NNH recruits, scored through Sudhir Nagvekar (9), Irfan Khan (11), Anwar Memon (10) and Noor Mohd Shaikh (7).
In the junior girls semi-finals, Agradneya Vyayamshala `B’ of Dombivli destroyed Fr Agnels 60-15. Fr. Agnel were outclassed with national Gayatri Manolikar standing like a rock in offence and defence. She scored 11 points, A Gauri contributed 12, Madhura Bodas 8 Priyadarshini Patil 9 while Shweta Shetty drained six points for the losers.
