Chandigarh, April 8: Former president of Board of Control for Cricket in India Inderjit Singh Bindra has demanded a probe into the recent allegations of match-fixing involving South Africans, including captain Hansie Cronje, in the one-day series in India from March 9 to 19.

The Delhi Police has registered a case against Hansie Cronje, teammates Herschelles Gibbs, Nicky Boje, Pieter Strydom and Henry Williams, allegedly involved in betting during the India-South Africa one-day series last month. The police has also arrested London-based Indian bookie Sanjeev Chawla in a case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy.

CAPE TOWN: Opener Herschelle Gibbs termed as “nonsense” and “ludicrous” accusations of match fixing against him. “That’s nonesense, completely ludicrous,” said Gibbs, who was unsure of what steps to take next. “I really don’t know. What does a person do when something like this happens?”

South African team manager Goolam Raja called the issue “one big joke”. Expressing his “absolute surprise,” he said, “I don’t know where such a story could come from.”

Dr Ali Bacher, managing director of the United CricketBoard of South Africa, stood staunchly behind Cronje. “He is a man of unimpeachable integrity and honesty and the Board is standing four square behind him,” he said.
