Benazir Bhutto arrived in Pakistan on Saturday, an aide said, returning from a visit to Dubai after President Pervez Musharraf invoked emergency powers and suspended the country’s constitution.

“She left Dubai and I spoke to her on the phone and she said the plane was taxiing at Karachi airport,” the former Prime Minister’s aide, Wajid Shamsul Hassan, said by telephone from London. “Bhutto is sitting on a plane at Karachi airport. She is waiting to see if she is going to be arrested or deported,” Hassan said.

Earlier Bhutto’s husband Asif Zardari had confirmed that Bhutto was headed for Pakistan. “Yes, I can confirm that she has left for Pakistan. She is flying to Karachi tonight,” he said.

“She knew that emergency is declared in Pakistan and she left for that reason only. She promised the people of Pakistan that she will be with them in all the time in the need of hour,” Zardari told CNN-IBN. When asked about his party’s reaction to Musharraf’s latest move, he said: “ We will oppose the emergency and will make sure that democracy is restored”.
