After a gap of three years, Bengal Engineering and Science University, (BESU) will hold the elections of its students’ body on December 30.

The election will throw a challenge to both the rival students’ groups — Independents Consolidation (IC) and Student Federation of India (SFI) — which will try to hard to have the edge. The authorities of the university will also have a challenge to conduct the elections peacefully since campus violence and unrests have been frequent in last few years.

“We had studied the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee on conducting elections at an education institute and we are making it applicable for the university,” said Biman Bandopadhyay, the registrar of BESU.

As per the recommendations for the university, the students who will be contesting the election or will vote must have a minimum attendance of 75 percent. As a pre-requisite for contesting the polls, the candidates should not have any previous record of any conviction.

According to the authorities, the candidates who have got the ill repute of being the troublemakers or have violated the student code of conduct in the university do not get a chance to stand in the elections. There will also be a strict vigil on the campus during the campaign to see that the students do not involve in any acts of violence.

The students will be debarred from using any printed campaign materials during the campaigning in order to keep a check on the poll budget. The students can, however, use handwritten posters for campaigning.

The students elect the class representatives who in turn nominate members of the students’ body. This is for the first time such a stringent rules for elections have been imposed by any university in the state.
