Doordarshan will air a documentary movie on Ashapurna Devi on January 7 as a tribute to the Bengali literary legend on her birth centenary. The initiative was taken by Ashapurna Devi Satyabarsha Purti Udjapan Committee led by noted author Mahasveta Devi.

Mahasveta Devi is also organising a two-day event from January 3 on the occasion of the 101th birth anniversary of the Jnanpith awardee. Programmes like cultural performance by Ashapurna Devi’s relatives, a painting exhibition depicting the author’s life, an exhibition-cum-sale of some of her works, a drama based on one of her books along with two short films will be some of the highlights of the event.

“Ashapurna Devi was a legend who carved out a niche for herself in the world of literature. Very few writers have the capacity to magnetically draw such a fan following. The programme organised by the committee is an effort to pay a tribute to the writer who got appreciation from all quarters of the society,” said Mahasveta Devi.

While around 25 painters, including Suvaprasanna and Wasim Kapoor, are busy adding finishing touches to their paintings showcasing the life of the great author, nearly 100 writers and authors from Assam, Orissa, Jharkhand, Mumbai and Delhi are expected to gather for a felicitation programme on January 3.

The committee, which is investing Rs 5.5 lakh in the centenary celebration, will soon launch a website on Ashapurna Devi.
