Thousands of BBC staffers took out a full-page newspaper ad on Saturday voicing support for BBC director general Greg Dyke who resigned on Thursday.

‘‘Greg Dyke stood for brave, independent and rigorous BBC journalism that was fearless in its search for truth,’’ the ad said. ‘‘We are dismayed by his departure but are determined to maintain his achievements and vision for an independent organisation.’’

Meanwhile, correspondent Andrew Gilligan, whose story that the British government had ‘‘sexed up’’ its Iraq dossier, resigned from the BBC, arguing the report was right. Gilligan said that his report that the government exaggerated the threat posed by Iraq to justify the war was mostly right.
