NEW DELHI, FEB 28: An army officer was killed when he led an attack against ULFA militants, killing three of them, in Nowgong district of Assam, Army said here on Monday.

Lt Mayekar Narendra Atmaram was grievously injured when he was fired upon by the militants hiding in a village during a cordon and search operation on Saturday.

Despite bleeding profusely, Atmaram charged against the militants regardless of his injuries and killed two of them in a hand-to-hand fight, an Army spokesman said, adding the officer refused to be evacuated till the raid was completed.

The officer succumbed to his injuries in hospital, while the third militant was killed by Armymen in an exchange of fire.

The Armymen, led by Atmaram, had chased the militants through three villages and struck them in the fourth one.

The militants killed were identified as Tridip Bhuyan, `finance secretary of’ `Madhyamik Anchalik Parishad’ of ULFA and Ranjani Bordoloi and Dhan Bora of the outfit’s mobile action group, the spokesman said.

A nine mm Browning pistol, ammunition, financial accounts of the Parishad, stamps and other documents were recovered from the spot.
