The Prevention of Money Laundering Bill was passed amid the Opposition boycotting the Lok Sabha.

When the House passed the Prevention of Money Laundering Bill with certain amendments to remove loopholes in the legislation, there were 41 members present in the House, of the total 545.

The Bill, passed by a voice vote, provides that a police officer can investigate a money laundering offence under the Act only after he has been specifically authorised by a director level officer of the Central government.

FM P. Chidambaram said there was certain lacunae in the Act passed in 2002 and ‘‘It seems not enough homework has been done with regard to the definition and authority.’’ He said in view of this, certain changes had to be incorporated so that shortcomings in the earlier legislation were rectified.
