CHENNAI, February 27: S A Basha, president of Al-Umma, has issued a legal notice to the Secretary, Public Department (SC), calling for reasons and documents in support of banning the organisation.

A Sirajudeen, counsel for Basha, in his legal notice issued on Thursday, stated that the government had not given any material or specific instance to support its allegation that Basha promoted enmity, hatred between Hindus and Muslims on the grounds of religion. In the absence of any specific reasons which prompted the government to make such a sweeping observation, he said that his client was unable to make any representation to the government, as required by the GO.

The advocate said it was a case of misuse of power with ulterior motive. The order banning Al-Umma exhibited non-application of mind and hence, was null and void and non-existence in law.

He urged the government to furnish the necessary details to enable his client to exercise his right of making representation before the expiry of one monthdeadline.
